Elizabeth's PROM Story

By Elizabeth, USA
PROM at 34 weeks + 2 days. Delivery at 35 weeks.
Story added: 2001-10-21
I was probably leaking for awhile but thought it was stress incontinence. My friends threw me a surprise baby shower and then there were two family birthdays. I think it was easier and less worrisome to think it was just urine. And my other pregnancies were so uneventful. Then at 34 weeks,2 days I had some blood around 2 am. I went to see my midwife the next morning and tested positive for ruptured membranes. She drove me over to the hospital and I was admitted and put on bedrest (because the fluid was so low) and antibiotics (to prevent infection) and a monitor(to make sure the baby wasn't stressed). They didn't want to induce since the baby was strong and there was no sign of infection. The Dr explained that each day the baby stayed inside was better for the baby. Because with ruptured membranes, my body automatically starts making steroids to help the baby's lungs mature. And if labor began, they would not stop it. It was awful waiting and worrying in the hospital and missing the family at home. But it was worth it in the end! After 5 days I went into labor on my own and he was born 6 lbs 9.5 oz and 18 inches long. He had to stay in the Special Care nursery for 24 hrs observation and then he was okayed to stay with me until we went home together the next day. He has a little trouble latching on to nurse. But he is filling diapers .He has his 2nd Dr's appt tomorrow because he hadn't regained his birth weight at the last visit. I think he is gaining now though. He is stronger and more alert.
Thank goodness for excellent knowledgeabe support,LOVE,and good medicine ..it helped our baby boy .
