Jennifer's PROM Story

Story added: 2001-11-21
This was my first pregnancy. My hubby and I were married in 1997, and we wanted to put off having children until I was finished school (I will have my MA in Counseling Psychology in December, 2001!!:), but in January of2000, we couldn't wait any longer, and it seemed like everyone but us were having babies. After trying for a while, I saw a Dr. about infertility because my cycles were abnormal. She gave me Clomid, and after a romantic evening at a jacuzzi suite in Cape Cod, along withthe help of the meds, we were finally pregnant!!! It was June 18, and I went to the doctors for a confirmation test, just because I couldnt believe it was true!
My whole pregnancy went well, I never had an ounce of morning sickness. I did bleed at nine weeks, but the doctor stated it was becuase of intercourse, so we were extra careful after that. At 18 weeks, I woke up and noticed a pink discharge, so I called the doctor and she told me to come in at 1:15. I was alittle nervous, particularly since we did not have sex for a week, so I knew I could not be that. At 11, I went to my mother's house to pick up a few things before going to my appt. At 12:30, I went to use the bathroom before leaving for my appt, and my water broke. I just broke out in tears when I looked in the toilet and saw the mucous plug and all that blood. I then called 911 and the ambulance took me to the hospital. The ambulance workers were very concerned that my pulse was so high (155). Gee, do you possibly think it could be because Im loosing my baby???
While I was in the hospital, my doctor told me I had no fluid left. she said there was no hope, and that I should get induced. This was such a hard decision for me to make, especially since my baby was still alive, his heart beating away. It seemed I could feel his movements even more since there was no fluid to buffer his kicks. I would cry every night because I just could not make such a decision. The doctor told me even if I went full term, the baby's lungs would never be mature enough to live, and that my chances for infection were high. On Friday, October 5, I broke down crying, I just couldnt take the sufferring any more, and I decided to get induced. I was induced at 11, and I dialated 10 cm in only 3 hours (thats why I knew it must be an incompetant cervix). Michael Kwame Bonsu was born and died on October 6. He was 9.5 inches long, 9 ounces. He looked to much like my husband, though he had my lips.
Two days following my return home, I had to return to the hospital because I felt something "fall out of me". I thought my uterus collapsed, but it actually was part of the placenta still inside me. Thank god I did not need a D&c, but I was placed on meds that gave me contractions to get the rest out.
If I had only seen this website before everything happened, I dont think I would have gotten induced, and I would probably have had more hope than what the doctors had given me. I have now changed doctors, just because my old one was very unempathetic and told me next time around she shouldnt need to pay any extra attention to me because she thinks it was "just an accident". My new doctor is so much more caring, and sais it does sound like an incompetant cervix, and that he will do what ever I need to make it through next time.
I miss Michael so much, but I know he will always be my little angel.
