Heather's PROM Story

By Heather, Nebraska USA
PROM at 34 weeks + 3 days. Delivery at 34 weeks + 6 days.
Story added: 2002-01-13
I had a totally normal, uneventful pregnancy until my water ruptured while shopping! Fortunately, I was close to the hospital and was able to get medical attention withing minutes (Normally, we live 22 miles from the hospital.). With the labor pains that quickly ensued, I don't know if we would have been able to delay delivery had we been at home.
I was given Brethine to inhibit contractions and 2 steriod shots (24 hours apart) to mature my baby's lungs. Three days after I experienced PROM, I was allowed to go into labor. We were blessed with a healthy boy who had no breathing difficulties. He did become jaundiced the second day and was kept in the hospital an additional 4 days. He is now 20 months old and has experienced tremendous health.
Currently, I am 17 1/2 weeks pregnant and again, doing well. Naturally, I concern myself with every little pain, whether it is a Braxton Hicks contraction or a strained muscle. Like many of you, we have been told that PROM is not anticipated again. It is suspected that I had an asymptomatic bacterial infection much like the one I had at 8 weeks with this pregnancy. Precautions are being taken and extra testing is being done. We praise God for each day that we have with this new baby and pray that this baby will have a less traumatic beginning.
