Kia's PROM Story

By Kia, Great Neck, NY USA
PROM at 29 weeks + 4 days. Delivery at 31 weeks + 6 days.
Story added: 2002-12-18
Textbook pregnancy until around 28 1/2 weeks when I thought I had a yeast infection. Made appt w/my doctor. Was given a very vigorous internal exam that led me to shout out, and sent home w/some cream. In retrospect, I realize that I started leaking fluid shortly after the internal, but this being a first pregancy, thought it was just discharge from cream prescribed to me. (I don't know if it's just my imagination, but amnio seemed to have a very distinct odor to me).

Water broke while brushing teeth in 29th week. Rushed to the hospital where measures were taken to postpone labor and mature baby's lungs. Delivered son via emergency C at 31 weeks and 6 days. He was 3 lbs. 10 oz. He stayed in the hospital for 41 days because on day 4 of his life he got a hospital infection (totally unrelated to PPROM -- how unlucky is that?). He was sent home with us at 4 lbs. 5 oz. on a monitor due to some bradycardia caused by reflux that the doctor wanted to monitor, but true to form, as he neared the date that should have been his birthday, all bradycardia cleared up.

My son is 11 months old now, and weighs a wopping 23 lbs. He is doing great developmentally, and he fully caught up with his peers w/regards to milestones at around 7 1/2 months. I'm definitely nervous re: any future pregnancies --especially now that I know what can go wrong. (I was blissfully unaware this first time around).

To all other PPROM moms, dads and babies -- you are in my thoughts and prayers. Good luck to us and to our born and unborn children.
