Amber's PROM Story

By Amber, Lansing, MI USA
PROM at 19 weeks + 3 days. Delivery at 26 weeks + 4 days.
Story added: 2004-03-24
This was my first pregnancy and a very stressful one. I began having heavy bleeding at 10weeks and then again at 14 weeks. Ultrasound showed a blood clot behind my placenta causing the bleeding. I continued to spot and was put on bed rest at 17 weeks. I woke up at 19w3days to lots of light brown watery "bleeding". I thought it was strange that it was so watery but I waited until my doctors appointment 3 days later to tell my doctor about it. At this appointment the ultrasound showed less than 1 cm of fluid.

My ob refered us to a specialist who highly recommended terminating the pregnancy. He gave us all of the scary statistics and basically gave us a 70-90% chance of our baby not surviving.

Since terminating was never an option for my husband and I, I continued bed rest and weekly ultrasounds. I never accomulated more than 1cm of fluid. After spending Christmas day and New Years eve in labor and delivery with contractions, I was admited to the hospital at 25weeks 6 days.
The following Sunday 26weeks 4 days I woke up to heavy bleeding and contractions and was given mag sulfate. However this did not stop my contractions and our beautiful baby girl, Ava Therese, was born naturally. She is currently in the NICU and is doing very well. PROM causes a lot of stress in a pregnancy but the outcome is worth everything!
