PROM at 30 weeks + 4 days. Delivery at 32 weeks.
Story added: 2004-05-26
My hearts go out to you who are currently going thru this. I am posting this because I am looking to see if I might find any explanation or help in helping my PROM experiences maybe as a preventive.

I have had 5 pregnancy's. My water broke with each of them-

1 36 1/2 wk's boy 6lbs 12 oz's

Seemed to be a normal pregnancy had ultrasound around 13 wks because not sure of date (doctor kept saying but I knew the approx date should be middle of July). The ultrasound said 07/24. Seemed to progress ok and I had the regular ultrasound around 17 weeks and determined was a healthy boy, but they moved the due date to 07/12. I felt what I now call contractions, but I thought the baby was just pressing up against my stomach a lot then. Blood work looked ok . On Friday before Father’s Day that year, I had some leaking, not a lot, 1 pad a day, but I thought was just urine (1st time mom). The next Monday, I just had a feeling I needed to go in and get checked before going to work. I walked into labor and delivery and said that I was not sure anything was wrong but that I felt I needed to be checked, I did not even tell them about the leaking. The litmus test was positive for amniotic fluid, so I was admitted on June 19. Was having contractions but not progressing in dilating. Finally around 12 pm was put on Pit drip and was getting really good contractions but no change in dilation. They up’d the pitocin and finally started progressing, but the doctor advised me that because of the time I had had my membranes ruptured, they wanted to do a c/s, but an emergency came in from a car accident and they had to do a c/s, so I was delayed. They came back in to get me for the c/s but once again had an emergency. I gave birth vaginally to my son, 52 hours after my water broke. We both went home from hospital 12 hours later, which in hindsight, he should have been in NICU

No problems this pregnancy, except for a lot of weight gain and no appetite.
My water broke and I had him 23 hours later, in NICU for 1 week for lung infection.

3 37 wk's girl 9lbs
I had a partial thyroid-ectomy at 4 months. I was up at hospital just about every week from 30-36 weeks because I knew my water was leaking. The strip test was negative, fern test was positive and the ultrasound showed good amount of water 9 and above but I was sent home being told my water had not broke that I was just having bladder control issues. She was born after my membranes ruptured 13 hours.

4 29 wk's girl 3lbs 4 oz's
I was at work one day and felt something move and then what felt like a contraction. I about fell over. Felt a couple more so I went in to my midwife to get a pregnancy check. I was sent for an ultrasound to see about dates because I had been having regular periods. They did the ultrasound, but asked us to wait that we needed to speak to a specialist. They let me know that I had a tear in my sac and that my daughter had hydrocephaly (water on the brain). They gave us the usually option to terminate, which was not an option for us, so we went in for u/s every 3 weeks. I started spotting but the u/s showed the tear to be sealed, not to worry about it. Because I never dilated or ephased, they never worried about the contractions. My water broke at 26-27 wk's and was pretty bloody. My fluids stayed around 1.5 and we met with the neonatologist about life flighting her when born to do a shunt surgery. I stayed in hospital til she was born at 29 wk's. I called the nurse because I had a small contraction and she caught my daughter. On a ventilator 24 hours and no oxygen til discharged from NICU 6 wks later. We are still dealing with issues today.

5 32 wk's girl 4lbs 9 oz's
I was put on high doses of birth control to control bleeding from last child, breast milk dried up and got pregnant on very high dose of birth control. This time, was put on bed rest at home right away, still having contractions and minimal spotting, but took each week at a time with seeing OB 1 week and maternal fetal medicine the next week, doing transvaginal u/s. My water broke at 30 1/2 weeks and stayed in hospital till she was born at 32 wk's. Labor was induced and was 24 hours on pit to get contractions started. She stayed in NICU for 2 weeks and has a few things we are still dealing with.

My water breaks but I do not dilate or go into contractions. I have to go on PIT drip to start. I have been to maternal fetal medicine with the last 2 with u/s every 2.5 weeks. My cervix always looks ok. I am on synthroid, monitored monthly and levels always look ok. No one yet has been able to offer a suggestion...No one seems to be able to offer explanations as to why I might be breaking my water each time, nutrionally, physically, etc.

My husband and I would like to have 1 more, but the long stay in the hospital due to PROM is difficult with all the children.

Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts?
