Dalia's PROM Story

By Dalia, Oxford UK
PROM at 24 weeks + 2 days. Delivery at 38 weeks.
Story added: 2005-11-16
This is my third pregnancy. I have 2 lovely girls aged 7 and 5. Their pregnancies were normal and smooth with no problems.

This time at the 24th week I was out shopping all day. Suddenly i felt gush of water running down. I felt very frightened. Drove straight to hospital. After several tests and examination and ultrasound, doctors were certain that contractions were about to start and that I will go into labour.

I had to be transferred to a hospital that had NICU that could handle a baby that small. I was given steroid injection to help the baby's lungs develop and started antibiotics to prevent infections from developing.

By the second day the amniotic fluid stopped leaking, I was told that this was because there was little left and the baby's head plugged the hole. I stayed in hospital undedr observations until week 27 during which I had a few more ultrasounds that found the water level inside adequate despite being on the low side.

I then moved back home almost resting completely until week 31. At that point with the water still not leaking again I started gradually returning to normal life but with a lot of rest.

I finally had the baby in week 38 with a planned C-section to avoid putting any stress on the baby.

Thanks god, it went well and delivered a healthy baby girl. She is now 4 weeks and with everything being normal.

Until now we don't know if the membrane has resealed or was just 'plugged' but it was a miracle that we appreciated and wish you all the same kind of miracle.
