Wendy's PROM Story

By Wendy Moseley, Conyers, GA USA
PROM at 25 weeks + 4 days. Delivery at 31 weeks.
Story added: 2006-01-01
I had a previous high risk pregnancy,-PTL, but made it to 37 wks. New Dr did not think I was high risk, and all seemed well until 23 wks, I started contracting frequently, given prescription for Brethine, examine and cervix was close(no u/s done though).

Started leaking during 25th week in retrospect, but kept thinking it was urine, sweat due to summer heat. I had read enough pregnant message boards to believe that sporadic "wet" panties were par the course. However,PROM was confirmed at 2:20am at 26w2d on September 12, 2004 when I was awaken by a river running down my leg. Told hubby to start praying, called hospital to tell them I was heading in for a check. Anmniotic swab tested +, started on Mag Sulfate in order to stop contractions(was contracting every 5 minuteS). Given steroids for baby. Peri came in next day to tell me I was in hospital til delivery. A

In my heart I just knew I would not deliver at 26 wks, or even 27 wks. AFI was bewteen 3 and 5. My hope stayed til end of week 30, when I just felt delivery was immenient. On October 12, baby failed Biophysical u/s. Labor started during early morning hrs of October 15, 2004. Progressing to complete within 5 hrs, I delivered a baby boy via unmedicated VBAC.

Pathology of my placenta showed mild infection, I think I might have gotten the infection when I was checked the week before delvery vaginally(the head nurse insisted). I never showed any fever or other signs, but who knows? Baby Holt did have an infection, but had an overall easy NICU stay. Holt was discharged from NICU after only 26 days.

I feels so blessed, to have had over 5 wks of extra cooking time for Holt!!! PROM is so scary.
