Sherona's PROM Story

By Sherona, Karachi Pakistan

Story added: 2007-12-31
I am 26 and married for 2 years. In the beginning, we were taking precautionary measures but after 6 months we decided to have a baby. we tried for about 8 months and at last i conceived. Me and my hubby were really excited when we came to know about my pregnancy.

3 months passed fairly easy but after the first trimester in my 10th week, one day when i went into the washroom after wiping myself i noticed a blood spot on the tissue paper. i was really devastated and we rushed into the emergency. Doctors did an ultrasound and that day for the first time i heard my baby's heart beat. Doctor gave me an injuction (for keeping the progestrone level high i guess) and sent me back home with instruction of complete bed rest for a while.

I did that and everything went fine till my 17th week. i went for urine, wiped myself out and turned around to flush; when i saw a lot of blood. At that moment i felt i had lost my baby...and am pregnant no more. so i went to my doctor and was surprised to hear that my baby was perfectly fine and healthy. Blood that came with the urine, was from the placenta but it stopped naturally and i was perfectly fine. she again told me to go on complete bedrest.

I did that and i was fine for next 4 plus weeks. In my 21 st week i went to the doctor for routine check up because for last two three days i was feeling hard kicks like sensation in my lower abdomin. she did an ultrasound and told me that baby is perfectly healthy and fine. i came back escastic. when i woke up next morning and went to washroom i had a very concentrated urine with greenish and blackish tint. i got worried right away. i drank a lot of water and tried calling my doctor. when suddenly i felt rush of fluid, at first i thought i have lost urine but with the second gush i rushed again to my doctor.

What followed next was a nightmare. Doctor did an ultrasound and told me that i was leaking aminotic fluid. but still the water level was ok and admitted me in the hospital in the hope that the leaking membrane might seal themselves out.

7 to 8 days passed without any onset of labour, fetal heartbeat was strong as ever and finally we became hopeful. On the 9th day my doctor arranged for another ultrasound. i can never forget the moment when she told me that there was no more water left, the placenta had also started to tear off the uterine wall (which she showed me on the screen as well
). she still optd to wait for sometime but made this thing clear to me that the baby couldnot be saved as it had lost weight instead of gaining any in the last few days.

i cried my heart out and i still weep when i remember that time even now.

But late that night i started to bleed heavily with clots as big as my hand started coming out. so i was shifted to labour room and was induced artifical pains. In the morning i delivered a perfectly normal and healthy still born baby boy.

4 months have passed but still i am not able to overcome the pain of losing my baby.
