Maureen's PROM Story

By Maureen,
PROM at 27 weeksDelivery at 29 weeks.
Story added: 1997-10-06
I've had 2 preemies, both born at 29 weeks. My older son is now three years old and perfect. He truly is smart, handsome and charming! He was born early due to a possible incompetent cervix. He had a tough neonatal course due to some unusual complications but is just wonderful now.

My little one is now a little over one year old. He was born early due to PROM, like you. It happened for me at 27 weeks, with no warning at all. Earlier in the pregnancy, when I was 9.5 weeks along, my appendix ruptured and I had to have emergency major abdominal surgery. My little guy managed to hold tight even though all the uterine trauma. At 15 weeks, I had a cerclage placed just in case my cervix was weak. My cervix stayed closed and I had almost no problems with preterm contractions. One night at 27 weeks, my water broke. I was heartbroken, because I knew what it would mean if I had to have another premature baby. Thankfully, I never developed any infection and I stayed hospitalized for two weeks. I was just getting ready to go home on total bedrest when some ultrasound scans showed my son had changed position from being frank breech to a complex presentation (he was in a diving position, with his head down in the birth canal nibbling on his little toes). He did this in virtually no amniotic fluid, so I was prepped for an emergency cesarean. My little boy is doing so well now, after a very complicated neonatal course, again due to some unusual complications. He is already walking which just amazes me; my older son born at the same gestational age didn't walk until he was 17 months (which is about right considering how early he was) but my little one started to take steps at 12 months. He is quite precocious!
