Mimi's PROM Story

By Mimi, Sydney Australia
PROM at 34 weeksDelivery at 34 weeks.
Story added: 2008-06-06
Early on the morning of my baby shower I was woken by a gushing sensation. I called the hospital and was advised to lay down and wear a sanitary pad and call them back in half an hour to let them know if there was more fluid and if so, what colour. I did this but fifteen minutes later needed to stand up. As I did so, I had a gush of warm fluid that seemed to go on for a long time and I made hasty preparations to get to hospital.
Subsequent ultrasounds that day showed I did not have any fluid around the baby, but that the baby was not in any distress.
Later that afternoon I began to labor and by 10.30 that night was in delivery to have a caesarian delivery as the baby was in a frank breech position. At three minutes to midnight my beautiful girl was born.
It was found she had pneumonia and spent four weeks in the NICU and Special Care Unit before we brought her home.
While I have been told my PROM was "one of those things," it was suggested there may have been an infection for PROM to occur plus the baby having pneumonia.
She is very healthy now.
