Sandy's PROM Story

By Sandy, Perth, WA Australia
PROM at 30 weeks + 3 days. Delivery at 31 weeks + 4 days.
Story added: 2009-09-28
I must admit I had a very stressfull pregnancy. Moving country, leaving at my partner's dads for the first 4 months of my pregnancy (which was unplanned by the way) and we tried to hide it until 5 months when it was starting to show.
Despite all this I was a healthy 23 years old and never had any problems or complications during my pregnancy.
My waters broke at 30weeks and 3 days while i was sleeping, i rushed to the hospital where i was given steroids injections to help the babys lungs mature and sent to another hospital because i was going to have my baby withing 48 hours according to the midwife there.
I arrived to a different hospital and had to stay for 48 hours, was given antibiotics to prevent infections.
Not a single doctor or midwife could tell me if i was to give birth in 2 days or 2 weeks. Having no infection or contractions,i was sent back home.
I was still leaking amniotic fluid, and a week after I started contracting at 4 am. Went back to the hospital at 7 and had my baby at 5pm (natural birth). He was 42 cm and 1620 gr.
Stayed for 4 weeks in Special care.
It was very stressful but our baby didnt have any problems, thank God, just low birth weight. He's now 51 cm and 4kg400, 2 weeks past his dude date and he's fine !!!
I remember reading stories on this website when i was on bedrest wondering what was going to happen to me after my waters had broken.
We were very lucky that everything turned out great, my advice would be, take it one day at a time and have faith (and faith in yourself), the doctors there told me that one day in the womb is one week they wont have to spend in special care. So dont feel guilty if you only 'held' it a few days after PPROM, it can really make a difference!
