Laura's PROM Story

By Laura, Spokane, WA USA
PROM at 18 weeksDelivery at 22 weeks + 5 days.
Story added: 2010-07-19
I ruptured membranes at 18 weeks after having continuous spotting and bleeding from about 8 weeks on. I went on bedrest at 17 weeks hoping to stop the bleeding (I had already been taking it easy the whole pregnancy- no lifting working out etc.) After 5 weeks of bedrest, weekly blood draws to monitor anemia and white counts, as well as weekly ultrasounds to get AFI measurements I went into labor at 22 wks +5days and had an elevated white count showing I had an infection. My doctors feel that my placenta did not attach properly causing the bleeding which eventually led to the ruptured membranes. Our baby girl only lived a few minutes but we were able to spend those precious minutes holding her.

I also had oligohydramnios with my first pregnancy, but it was not discovered until 34 weeks. There are no lasting complications with my daughter who is now 2. The doctors do not feel that these problems are at all related.
