Dawn's PROM Story

By Dawn, San Angelo, Tx USA
PROM at 36 weeks + 5 days. Delivery at 36 weeks + 5 days.
Story added: 2000-09-22
At 36 w 5 d I woke up at 3 am with fluid gushing out. At first I thought I had wet myself, then realized that my water broke.

I went to the hospital and they determined that I had no contractions was not dilated.

After about an hour with no progress, I was put on Pitocin, but the baby's heartbeat was decelerating with the contractions. The Pitocin was stopped but by then, even the mild contractions I was having on my own were affecting the baby's heartbeat.

The doctor decided to do a C-section about 6 hours after I first arrived at the hospital. I had never made it past 1 cm.

The C-section was done with no complications and my son was healthy and weighed in at 6lbs 7oz.

The doctor could not give me a reason for the PROM. Up until that point, I thought my pregnancy was going very routinely.

This experience is making me question having another child, because I know that I was very lucky this time and don't want to put another baby at risk of being born earlier than my son.
